Acclaimed singer/songwriter Dermot Kennedy has announced a local talent competition ahead of his upcoming US “Better Days” summer tour. Kicking off July 29th in Nashville, the 13-city outing sees Dermot hitting the road for his first round of not-to-be-missed live performances in over 18 months. The competition offers local artists the opportunity to be personally selected by Kennedy to play a solo/acoustic, 20-minute set. The initiative is a full-circle moment for the artist Forbes called “truly authentic,” who began his musical journey busking on the streets of his native Ireland and eventually going on to sell over 500,000 tickets to his live shows combined.
Speaking about the initiative, Dermot explains, “After what has been a difficult time for many, live music has obviously suffered so much. As somebody whose first experience of live music was busking on the streets in Dublin and Boston, to small pubs and venues, those early opportunities were so important. I really am so grateful that now I’m in a position to play music all over the world and have people come to my shows. Now I want to pay it forward and give other young musicians the opportunity to have their music heard. In each city on my upcoming US ‘Better Days’ tour, I’d like to offer the opening slot to local artists looking to play their first show back after the pandemic, or maybe even their first show ever. I’ll choose my favorite artist in each city to open my show. I’m so excited to meet you, hear about your musical journey so far and watch you play. I’ll announce the artist I’ve chosen the night before each show so anyone that’s coming along can check them out first and support them.”
Instructions on how to enter the competition by the closing date are available via Dermot’s social platforms (links below). Participants are asked to submit a 2-3 video performance, bio and social links and technical rider. All are required to be local to each city; winners will be notified privately and later announced on his social platforms 24 hours in advance of each show.
Dermot Kennedy has been on an upward trajectory since the release of his impassioned debut album Without Fear on Interscope Records, which has sold over one million copies worldwide. His latest single, “Paradise” has amassed over 500 million streams and 7 billion global radio impressions. With over 23 million Spotify listeners and 2 billion total streams, the Brit-nominated Kennedy is a platinum-selling artist in over 12 countries and has the best-selling debut album in his native Ireland of this millennium. In addition to the “Better Days” headlining tour (dates below), Kennedy will also be performing at major festivals including Lollapalooza on August 1st and Austin City Limits on October 1st.
