Fresh off the release of his Hunched Jack Mixtape, Chengdu-born underground rapper jackzebra has returned with a new single, “New Age”. “New Age” captures jackzebra in an introspective spot, singing over production from Mimics Gate with an accompanying video that echos the transcendent nature of the track. This release captures jackzebra‘s growing command over the global underground as he looks forward to a run of shows at the top of next year, with dates in New York at Elsewhere on January 24th and Los Angeles at El Cid on January 30th — tickets HERE. With production credits from evilgiane, Eera, Elipropperr, Woesum, Glasear, and Cranes as well as features from SURF GANG‘s Harto Falión and Chinese underground rapper 南部犯罪份子 (roughly translated to Southern Criminal), Hunched Jack Mixtape serves as a love letter to the producers shaping the sonic landscape of the 2020s. The tape fuses futuristic club production with surreal pop sensibilities, creating bold, genre-defying soundscapes that connect China’s underground with the global avant-garde. The project ranges from the blown-out “Mosquito” to near-plugg cloud rap tracks like “Good Time”, marking jackzebra’s second release of the year following the Valentine’s Day drop of Above & Beyond and singles “HowManyDays” with Woesum and DJ Ess, “Locks Off” with Zukovstheworld, “Guliao” with Harto Falión, and “Givenchy” with SURF GANG leader evilgiane. Hunched Jack Mixtape is his first project released via New York artist-producer collective SURF GANG, a natural evolution for the rapper following his rise to the top of China’s booming 实感音乐 scene (also called shígǎn or experi-motional music). “I was just stunned,” evilgiane told The FADER of hearing jackzebra’s music for the first time. “One minute, it’s rap music, but then there’s also indie-sounding stuff and a bit of electronic stuff in there. He’s always keeping people on the edge with what he’s gonna release.”
Since entering the scene in 2021, jackzebra’s prolific output has deepened his reputation as one of the most boundary-pushing artists in China’s underground. After dropping jack1888 mixtape and jackprblmtape, he followed with a run of projects — 弓长张 (The bow is stretched), Young Powerful Run Mixtape, Mainland Characters, Never Give Up, and 拾 (Pickup) — that showcased his consistency and growth. He capped off 2024 with 王中王 (King of Kings) featuring Acid Souljah, Yung Frendi, and Harto Falión, while his track “你怎么知道” went viral across Chinese platforms. Closing out the year, his 34-track opus Above & Beyond, written during a visit to the States, marked his boldest step yet, embodying his commitment to scale and experimentation.
