KLEIN RELEASES MY OWN FAIRYTALE – OUT NOW
London outsider artist and composer Klein shares the video for “man in the mirror”, taken from her new album my own fairytale, out now digitally and on CD and vinyl through her own label, Parkwuud Entertainment via Roc Nation Distribution. Directed by Klein and Neva Wireko, the photographer behind JT’s City Cinderella cover, “man in the mirror” looks at performance, gender, family and how Klein sees the wider world around her. The song comes from the idea of wanting to becoming the ‘man in the mirror’ so she can protect herself and come to terms with things crumbling around her. At its core, my own fairytale is a modern classical album and Klein’s take on a dark Disney soundtrack. Piano, whistles, janky acoustic guitar playing, strings and drone run through the record. The opening minute of “man in the mirror” sounds amongst like Nollywood film soundtrack then goes into a rnb ballad then distorted rap, As the album reaches its final tracks, Klein’s voice starts to come through more at the fore front only to be taken away. The album also continues Klein’s collaboration with violinist and composer Sasha Scott , who co-wrote and arranged “Siren reloaded.” The piece came out of their work with the London Sinfonietta in which Klein also performed with the orchestra at Holland Festival earlier this year The final part of the album turns towards family. “promise to come home” is an eerie piano nod to Klein’s family, while “bridge the gap” feels like a distorted version of Hannah Montana’s “The Best of Both Worlds.” It’s also a small Easter egg. No one in Klein’s family knows anything about her musical or artistic career, so there is this strange Hannah Montana thing where an entire part of her life exists outside of them. Klein brings my own fairytale to London’s ICA for a headline show on September 30, followed by shows at Out.Fest in Barreiro, Unsound in Warsaw, Public Records in New York and Musica in Prossimità in Pinerolo through November, and her website has turned into a public access TV channel.
my own fairytale caps a full 2026 for Klein. She opened for Tinie Tempah, composed the soundtrack for Christelle Oyiri’s exhibition Belief May Vary at Amant in Brooklyn, and in June returned to the gallery for her first New York art show, Rack It!, a film installation responding to her 2025 art book of the same name, part dossier and part stage play on Young Thug’s YSL-RICO trial, shown alongside work from Kim Gordon and Oyiri. In July she released “man in the mirror” as the project’s first single, and two weeks later reunited with Oscar-nominated composer Mica Levi for Turn Up, a surprise joint EP. On the new project, “suspect” and “Treasure” call back to her previous release sleep with a cane, a UK rap record she recast as a folklore ambient tape, and Sasha Scott is the only credited feature. Klein was interviewed by Taylor Russell for a Marfa Journal cover story this year, and her September 30th headline show marks a return to the ICA, which made her artist-in-residence in 2018 and commissioned Care, the piece she went on to turn into her 2021 feature film.
