LACHIE GILL RELEASES SOPHOMORE EP WE NEVER SAID OUR GOODBYES

Australian singer-songwriter and The Voice Australia 2022 winner Lachie Gill returns with his powerful sophomore EP, We Never Said Our Goodbyes – a deeply personal collection of songs exploring love, life and loss with his trademark honesty.

Gill will celebrate the release with an intimate headline show at Melbourne’s Railway Hotel, Fitzroy North, on Friday 2 October, which is now SOLD OUT.

Following his 2023 debut EP Write It Out, We Never Said Our Goodbyes finds Gill with a stronger sense of identity as an artist and songwriter. “With this second EP, there was more freedom to go in the direction I wanted to go,” Gill says. “It made it more authentic to me and more honest than what I’ve done before.”

The EP reunites Gill with producer Andy Mak and acclaimed co-writer Thom Mak (Vera Blue), alongside collaborators Edwin White (Vance Joy, Jack River) and Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe, G Flip). At its heart is Gill’s ability to turn deeply personal experiences into songs that feel universal.

“I do love sad music,” Gill says. “My ballads are always my favourite songs. But I’m not that person who is sad in real life, I just love making sad music! I love that variation in my live set where people are going, ‘Holy shit, that was devastating,’ and then the next song they’re up and dancing. That’s the sort of artist I want to be.”

That emotional range runs throughout We Never Said Our Goodbyes, from the soaring pop of ‘Give Me a Little’ and bittersweet romance of ‘Sweet Something’, to the striking ‘Again and Again’, Elaskia collaboration ‘Your Side’, and relationship closer ‘Last Drive’. The EP’s emotional centerpiece, ‘Are You Okay?’, was inspired by Gill’s friend Justin, who died by suicide at 16. Written as the tenth anniversary of his death approached, the song reflects on grief, friendship and what Gill has learned in the years since.“My hope for this song is that people can get something from it,” Gill says. “The impact it could have is the most special part.” The closing song on the EP, ‘Again & Again’ was written during a period of time that Lachie felt like he just couldn’t get things right. “I was caught up in a previous relationship and was comparing every new one with the old one. A self destructive feeling that happened again and again.”

Outside of music, Lachie works closely with Australian mental health charity Speak & Share, speaking at schools, sporting clubs and workplaces and encouraging more open conversations around mental health, particularly among men and young people. “Especially for men, we don’t talk enough,” Gill says. “People aren’t having these conversations with each other, they’re holding onto a lot of things. I am super-passionate about getting that message across to people.”

Gill first rose to national prominence after winning The Voice Australia in 2022, captivating audiences with his soulful performances, powerful vocals and honest songwriting. After navigating the challenges that came with sudden public attention, he took time to reconnect with himself and his purpose as an artist. We Never Said Our Goodbyes marks that next chapter – one grounded in vulnerability, connection and storytelling on his own terms. “My favourite thing to do is perform for people, let people into my life and my stories,” Gill says. “I’m really excited. We’re gonna go for it.”
