The Ohioan singer and songwriter Michael Marcagi stopped in Berlin at Metropol on his EU & UK winter tour, among others, together with his band and special guest Evan Honer. The age-diverse, but mostly female, audience was already lining up in the freezing cold in front of the impressive venue before the doors opened.

Soon after everyone went inside, grabbed drinks, and chatted, it was already time for support act Evan Honer to take the stage. The Californian singer-songwriter started his set by telling the audience that this marked the 13th day without his bag and that “if someone knows someone at KLM, he just wants to talk.” He offered a set full of small stories and anecdotes tied to his songs, ranging from getting back together with your ex, to his dog, to borrowing his friend’s car, capturing the whirlwind of emotions that come with early adulthood—from joy to uncertainty. During his set, the room slowly filled with more fans.

Then it was time for Michael Marcagi to hit the stage, immediately setting the tone with his genuine and captivating energy, which flowed consistently throughout the entire performance. With his multi-instrumental live band, he filled the room with catchy folk-pop soundscapes and strong vocals, featuring, among other instruments, banjo and harmonica, with band members switching instruments for a few songs. The audience was glued to the stage and sang along word-perfect; only a few weren’t swinging and singing right away. Contrary to belief, there were only a handful of phones held up throughout his performance—until, of course, that changed when he started playing his catchy and viral song “Scared to Start,” which was impossible to escape on social media for a while.
Besides this fan-favorite, the setlist featured mostly songs from his latest EPs, as well as a few new tracks from his upcoming first full-length album. For the song “Humbling,” he brought Evan Honer back on stage to sing together, with Honer also showing off the stuffed dog that had been sitting in front of the drum kit all evening. With lighting that underlined the mood of the songs—at times resembling a sky full of stars—the impressive concert hall was beautifully highlighted.

Close to the encore, Marcagi took the time to introduce his band and thanked the fans for making it possible to play in cities he had only visited once or twice before, reflecting on the days when he was playing in bars back in Ohio. For the grand finale, a long guitar solo echoed through the room as Marcagi made his way through the photo pit, leaving the crowd in awe.
