QUADECA ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM Life 1 SLATED FOR RELEASE OCTOBER 1 VIA X8 MUSIC
Producer, singer, rapper, and visual artist Quadeca has officially announced that his highly anticipated forthcoming album, Life 1, will arrive October 1st via his own label X8 Music. Alongside the announcement, Quadeca has released the album’s intro and title track, “Life 1 (where did the time go)” as a single with an accompanying music video.
Following the surreal spontaneity of “Dark Magic,” the existential reflections of “Baby Steps,” and the bittersweet pop of “Hell of a time,” “Life 1 (where did the time go)” is the defining final statement in Quadeca’s Life 1 rollout. The new single continues to reveal the range of his most free and personality-driven work yet, embracing unexpected creative choices while finding beauty, humor, and meaning in the absurdity of being alive.
“Life 1 (where did the time go)” opens with springy, detuned synths bouncing around like percussion and a heavy 808 kick that gives the whirling loop its backbone and pulse. A looping piano riff and howling synth line sweep in alongside Quadeca’s repeating vocal refrain of “Where did the time go?” that slowly grows in dimension through stacks of harmonies and polyrhythmic vocal layering that feel like something from a bygone era. The progression takes an instrumental detour as flamenco-like guitar, warm jazz drums, and crashing cymbals push the track forward, leading to a climactic culmination of every layer as the vocal harmonies come back in and Quadeca shouts “I let it pass by, cause it doesn’t mean a thing to me,” a cynical cathartic acceptance to the powerlessness of being alive. The accompanying music video directed by Quadeca and Brendon Burton channels the absurd genre-bending liminality of the music into a cultish storybook metaphor for what it means to be an artist. The video opens on Quadeca setting up a pair of speakers in a field outside a large grain silo in rural Oregon, as a group of Mennonite women line up to form a communal dance circle behind him. Once the track launches into its main progression, Quadeca and the women start dancing to the music in their own way, not acknowledging each other. Quadeca dances aggressively, surrounded by a circle of speakers as wired headphones jiggle around his neck, while the Mennonites join hands and move in joyous harmony, women old and young united. They represent a cycle of idyllic past and present, of nature and technology. As the music grows increasingly cathartic, the video cuts from the dancing to scenes of the Mennonites smoking cigarettes and chatting around a tractor. They are fully in control and free in this space. By the time his once-reserved refrain of “Where did the time go?” has transformed into an intensifying mantra, he takes his circle of speakers and places them around the Mennonite dancing circle, leaving the music to them as he walks out of the frame. As the camera rises away to reveal the true vastness or the surreal location, the women run back to the silo, parading the speakers through the field in gleeful triumph.
The album announcement arrives on the heels of a massive global festival run for Quadeca, who has taken the Life 1 era to stages around the world this year with performances at Fuji Rock Festival in Japan, Lollapalooza in Chicago, and All Points East in London. He’ll continue the run this November with an appearance at Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival in Los Angeles alongside his previously announced Life 1 North American headline tour. The 22-show tour kicks off on October 10th in Mesa with stops in Dallas, Atlanta, New York, Toronto, and Chicago before wrapping up on November 10th in Los Angeles. Quadeca has partnered with City of Hope, with a portion of proceeds benefiting the organization’s efforts to advance cancer research, provide lifesaving treatments, and support children and families facing cancer.
