Ruthven releases his hotly-anticipated debut album Rough & Ready via Paul Institute / XL Recordings. Now available globally in both digital and physical formats.
The South London musician has always had a certain fervour associated with him. He first emerged in 2017 as a founding member of the Paul Institute – the label founded by A.K. and Jai Paul – while balancing his music-making with his role in the London Fire Brigade. In the long hours awaiting call-outs, when the truck was fully serviced and his equipment was ready for the next job, Ruthven crafted what would become his debut album Rough & Ready. Having meticulously developed his distinctive sound – a masterful fusion of classic R&B-influenced, soulful and funky maximalism – Ruthven has caught the attention of industry heavyweights, leading to supporting slots, tours, and collaborations with Sampha and electronic music sensations Overmono. Now, stepping confidently into his own spotlight, Ruthven delivers Rough & Ready, a transformative debut that firmly establishes his singular artistic vision. With contributions from A.K. Paul and Francis Anthony ‘Eg’ White, the album stands as both a powerful artistic declaration and the arrival of a fully-formed new creative force.
