Tampa Bay Buccaneers Dominate Las Vegas Raiders for Third Consecutive Victory

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers came out strong and finished even stronger on Sunday at Raymond James Stadium, overcoming a mid-game slump to secure a convincing 28-13 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Quarterback Baker Mayfield threw three touchdown passes, including two to rookie receiver Jalen McMillan, and the team weathered three turnovers thanks to a defense that limited the Raiders to just 286 total yards.
“Turnovers didn’t help,” said Head Coach Todd Bowles about the struggles in the second and third quarters. “We shot ourselves in the foot with a couple penalties, and they stoned us at the line of scrimmage a few times. We didn’t play well overall. It’s tough to win a game when you turn it over three times, but the guys stuck with it, made plays in the second half, and we got it done. It’s not always pretty, but as long as you win, it doesn’t matter how you do it.”
With the win, the Buccaneers moved into sole possession of first place in the NFC South for the first time since Week Four, after the Atlanta Falcons fell 42-21 to Minnesota. Tampa Bay improved to 7-6 with their third consecutive win, while Atlanta dropped to 6-7, having lost four straight. Since Atlanta holds the tiebreaker over the Bucs, Tampa Bay needs to match or exceed the Falcons’ win total over the final four weeks.
“Just because we’re in first place doesn’t mean anything,” Bowles said. “Staying in first is the real challenge. We’ve got four more games, and we’re happy to be playing meaningful football in December. We know what that means, and we’ve got to go out every week and try to win. But it feels good.”
Running back Rachaad White also played a pivotal role, scoring two touchdowns while compiling 109 total yards from scrimmage. He caught a five-yard pass in the first quarter and ran for another touchdown from three yards out in the fourth. The Bucs’ offense capitalized on two touchdowns in the first quarter and two in the fourth, while the defense held the Raiders to just three points in the second half. The Raiders had an opportunity to take the lead in the third quarter but were stopped when rookie safety Tykee Smith intercepted a pass intended for Brock Bowers at the Bucs’ seven-yard line.
Tampa Bay’s offense made an immediate impact, scoring on its first two possessions. The second touchdown was set up by a sack from linebacker Lavonte David on the Raiders’ opening drive. Mayfield capped an 85-yard, 12-play drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass to McMillan. McMillan’s second touchdown, with two minutes remaining, effectively sealed the win, making him the first Tampa Bay rookie to catch two touchdowns in a game since O.J. Howard in 2017. The last rookie wide receiver to do so was Mike Evans in 2014.

Despite a strong start, the Buccaneers’ second-quarter struggles resurfaced, allowing the Raiders to narrow the gap to 14-10 by halftime. Tampa Bay committed three turnovers in that quarter, one of which led to a Raiders touchdown, and another stalled a drive deep in Las Vegas territory. The Bucs allowed only 103 yards and six first downs but also lost safety Antoine Winfield Jr. and running back Bucky Irving to injuries.
“It doesn’t have to be pretty,” Mayfield said of the win. “There are a lot of things I’d like to have back, but it’s a resilient group. We play for each other, and guys step up when others are down. That’s what football is all about. We’ll take wins. It’s hard to win in this league, and our guys executed late to finish the game. That’s what football in December is all about.”
With injuries already depleting the secondary, the Bucs had to adjust their defense after Winfield was injured. Kaevon Merriweather, recently re-signed, started in place of Winfield and finished with seven tackles, a sack, and several crucial stops in the fourth quarter. Smith, Christian Izien, and Tavierre Thomas all contributed at safety, and the Bucs defense held the Raiders to 23 completions for just 205 yards on 37 attempts. After starting quarterback Aidan O’Connell was carted off in the third quarter with a leg injury, former Falcon Desmond Ridder finished the game for Las Vegas.
“When Win went down, it got tough,” Bowles said. “But Izzy, Tykee, Merriweather, and Tavierre stepped up, made big tackles, and kept us in the game.” The Bucs defense held Las Vegas to just four conversions on 13 third-down attempts, despite allowing three successful fourth-down conversions.
O’Connell scored the Raiders’ only touchdown on a one-yard run following a Mayfield fumble. David continued his stellar play with seven tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss, a quarterback hit, and a fumble recovery. He now has 37.5 sacks and 18 fumble recoveries in his career. David also played a key role in limiting Bowers, who came into the game as the NFL’s leading receiver, to just three catches on five targets.

“We just moved our coverages around, played different fronts,” Bowles explained about defending Bowers. “The guys did a great job disguising things on the back end.”
Tampa Bay’s rushing attack, which topped 150 yards for the third consecutive game, was led by White, who gained 90 yards. Sean Tucker added 47 yards on three carries, including a 34-yard run that set up White’s touchdown. Tight end Cade Otton had the longest play of the game with a 44-yard catch-and-run in the fourth quarter, setting up McMillan’s second touchdown. Otton finished with three catches for 70 yards, while Mike Evans had four catches for 69 yards, including a 32-yard reception during the team’s third touchdown drive.
“Rachaad played tough and gritty,” Bowles said. “He ran hard and caught the ball well. It was a tough game for him. Tucker made plays too. We’ve got three good running backs, and any of them can break a play.”
The Buccaneers will look to extend their win streak to four games when they visit Los Angeles to face the Chargers in Week 15. The win over Las Vegas was their first home victory since September, improving their Raymond James Stadium record to 3-4. They will finish the season with consecutive home games against Carolina and New Orleans.
“It feels good to get a win at home,” Bowles said. “We’ll be on the road the next two weeks, so it was great to get one at home.”
