That Mexican OT Levels Up With ‘Recess,’ His Heavy-Hitting and Hook-Filled New Album
Armed with one of the smoothest flows in the rap game and animated by his irreverent sense of humor, That Mexican OT is coming for the number one spot. The 26-year-old Texan releases his new album Recess, a worthy follow-up to his acclaimed and commercially successful efforts, Lonestar Luchador (2023) and Texas Technician (2024). Channeling the mischievous and carefree spirit of a trouble-making kid on a playground, the tape is the latest showcase of the Bay City, TX rapper’s singular blend of lightning-fast flows and Texas-fried melodies. Threaded together with skits that showcase OT’s expert world-building and sharp sense of humor, the 24-track album furthers the rapper’s exploration of the Texas sound he loves, complete with organ blasts, scratching guitars, and percussion purpose-built to make car stereos bounce.
OT imbues every song with that Texas flavor, even as Recess adds new colors to OT’s palette. Setting the tone with lyrical exercise “Hate Being Famous,” OT opens up about his struggles to reconcile his rising public profile and his need to be his authentic self, while the second song, “Beat Box,” boasts a classic boom-bap beat that meshes perfectly with OT’s drawl. “Chronic,” a collaboration with L.A.’s Bravo The Bagchaser, and produced by Platinum-selling production duo Bankroll Got It, is OT’s take on a West Coast rider’s anthem. Other songs stress OT’s skill with melodies, reflecting the rapper’s love of genres like rock and country: Lil Wayne collaboration “Baby Mad At Me” tells a relationship tale with wailing guitars; the tongue-in-cheek “Weed Eater” lovingly satiraizes classic Country & Wesstern music, and the emotional “Runnin’” shimmers with a sumptuous that fits the modern Nashville sound.
Recess has plenty of experimentation, but it is also packed with the Texas-style bangers that fans have come to expect. “F*ck On Me,” a collaboration with Detroit’s NASAAN, stacks out-of-pocket boasts over a swinging beat that would make Pimp C proud. “Accessories,” the recent single, recruits fellow Mexican-American rapper Peso Peso for a sumptuous song for the stoners. OT continues to collaborate with rappers from his home state’s scene, teaming up with BigXThaPlug on the fiery “U And Me,” connecting with frequent collaborator Sauce Walka and Bay City day one Hogg Booma for “Guidance,” and Lil Jairmy and OTB Fastlane join the party on “Beat Box.” Featuring additional guest spots from Denzel Curry and Money Man, Recess is available on all platforms via Capitol/GoodTalk/Good Money Global/Manifest.
Earlier this summer, That Mexican OT announced the “Recess Tour,” launching in late August. The tour finds the Bay City rapper performing 24 dates across the South and Midwest, stopping in cities like Memphis, Pittsburgh, and Minneapolis, and spending 4 dates touring his native Texas. The upcoming “Recess Tour” will feature live performances of songs from the new album and his catalog full of hits. Tickets for the “Recess Tour” are available at ThatMexicanOT.net
After breaking out in 2023 with his PLATINUM-selling hit “Johnny Dang” ft. Paull Wall & DRODi and the critically acclaimed album Lonestar Luchador–earning “Best of” recognition from The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Complex, and Pitchfork–That Mexican OT took his success to a new level in 2024. The rapper earned a spot on the 2024 XXL Freshman list, was named one of the 7 Artists Shaping the Sound of 2024 by The New York Times, appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast (his episode topped the podcast chart for multiple days), sat for an interview with Nardwuar, headlined a show at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado, and shut down his sets at the Austin City Limits Festival. Last March, OT shared Texas Technician, which featured guest spots from Slim Thug, Paul Wall, and many more from the Texas scene, as well as national figures like Moneybagg Yo.
