Top 5: NHL 2023/24 Power Rankings

Power rankings have become an indispensable means of scoring throughout America, employed by both national media outlets and leagues to assess how their teams are faring.
The rankings look beyond their performance in terms of sporting competition, though it shouldn’t be surprising that during any given season, the team with the most wins tends to emerge on top. Of course, winning is their primary aim, and so if one team does it more often than others, they must be considered the superior option.
Power rankings usually combine a number of aspects that go deeper than the results being played. For instance, the latest set of NHL power rankings to have been created will be based on the recent NHL Draft and Free Agency processes. Those who use a mathematical algorithm to score each franchise will look at how well each franchise has done and then look to score them across a variety of factors.
This information can then be used in a plethora of ways by fans, as they are able to see what others think of their favorite team and the others across the league. While there is no guarantee that the best-ranked team is going to be the eventual Stanley Cup winners in 2024, there is a feeling that the teams ranked in the top five will be among the contenders following the recruitment that they managed in this offseason.
So, with fewer than 100 days left until the NHL regular season for the 2023/24 campaign begins, which teams are currently ranked inside the top five at this moment in time?
1. Carolina Hurricanes
The Carolina Hurricanes are ranked as the No. 1 team in the NHL at the moment, with the organization having had a successful offseason in terms of their recruitment. The team managed to acquire Bradly Nadeau as their 1st Round pick in the draft, and nabbed the signatures of Michael Bunting and Dmitry Orlov in free agency. The team also managed to lockdown their two goaltenders in Frederick Andersen and Antti Raanta. The team are yet to lose anybody, too, which is why many believe they are contenders for the Stanley Cup this season.
2. New Jersey Devils
If you use power rankings to help you when making betting predictions, then you might want to consider the New Jersey Devils. According to the available NHL odds, they have a better chance of winning the Stanley Cup compared to the Hurricanes. Many like the business that the organization has managed to do in recent years, and this offseason continued to follow that trend. The team has progressed impressively and many expect them to follow the progression up now that they have Tyler Toffoli as part of the roster. Combine his arrival with the re-signing of Timo Meier and the rumors of a potential acquisition for goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, it is easy to see why the Devils are high up in the power rankings.
3. Edmonton Oilers
Currently the widespread favorites to win the 2023/24 NHL Championship, the Edmonton Oilers are ranked as high as third in the latest power rankings following the conclusion of the NHL Draft and free agency. The Canadian outfit has had a difficult time this offseason as they were unable to pick in the first round of the draft, and do not have the cap space for new signings. Nonetheless, they have arguably two of the best ice hockey players in the game at the moment in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. If these two perform as well as they always do, then there is no shock why the Oilers are among the favorites.
4. Vegas Golden Knights
Winning your maiden Stanley Cup title is a difficult achievement. Going back-to-back is arguably harder. However, the Vegas Golden Knights are a team many believe could do it. The team has managed to have a successful offseason in terms of their recruitment, as they have managed to re-sign Adin Hill to a new two-year deal, thus keeping their winning goaltender between the sticks. They also managed to dump Reilly Smith in order to create cap space to hand Ivan Barbashev a new five-year deal and keep him in Vegas. Crucial business that provides them with a huge chance of back-to-back success.
5. Toronto Maple Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leafs are also considered a contender for the upcoming season to win the Stanley Cup, and the power rankings appear to reflect the general consensus around the organization. The team did not have many draft picks (just three), but they added experience in free agency with Tyler Bertuzzi, Max Domi and Ryan Reaves all joining. If they can get Auston Matthews’ contract sorted, then they may just have everything they need to play the best hockey on the ice and challenge for the biggest trophy in sports (literally)!
