Daniil Trifonov’s Mi Historia Americana – Sur is out on October 2 2026 by Deutsche Grammophon. The second volume of his autobiographical journey across the Americas and his most personal album to date combines solo repertoire with two recordings for piano and orchestra, moving from Cuba and the Dominican Republic to Brazil, Peru and Argentina. Much of the album’s inspiration came during an extended stay with his family in the Dominican Republic, where he found time to immerse himself in Latin American piano music. The album is available digitally, on 2 CDs and as a 3-LP edition; the separate five-track vinyl release The Encores follows on the same day. The filmed São Paulo performances will premiere on STAGE+ on October 3, 2026.

At the heart of Mi Historia Americana – Sur are two orchestral works recorded in São Paulo in February 2026 with members of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (OSESP) and Venezuelan multi-instrumentalist, arranger and musical director Gonzalo Grau. The album opens with Grau’s arrangement of Ary Barroso’s Aquarela do Brasil. Created especially for the project, Cuadros del Sur was co-commissioned by OSESP, Deutsche Grammophon, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and the Aspen Music Festival. Grau draws on music from Osvaldo Golijov’s La Pasión según San Marcos and takes formal inspiration from Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Trifonov and OSESP present the world premiere recording; OSESP is also the first Brazilian orchestra ever to appear on a Deutsche Grammophon recording.

The piano solo program develops the album’s story on a more intimate scale. Villa-Lobos’s Bachianas brasileiras No. 4, together with works by Mozart Camargo Guarnieri and Oscar Lorenzo Fernández, extends its Brazilian thread, while Ginastera’s Milonga and Second Piano Sonata reveal a contrasting Argentinian voice. Trifonov’s discoveries from the Dominican Republic are reflected in pieces by Michel Camilo, Juan Francisco García and Rafael Bullumba Landestoy, alongside two works by Cuba’s Ernesto Lecuona. Gabriela Lena Frank’s Sonata andina brings Peru into the program, while Trifonov’s own Tango offers an early glimpse of his work as a composer.
