NATALIA LAFOURCADE RELEASES NEW ALBUM
Natalia launched the Cancionera Tour in Xalapa, Mexico. She is set to take the tour to the U.S., Canada and Europe over the coming months. The tour features intimate arrangements as Natalia reinterprets her classic hits and performs songs from her new album.
“For some time now, I have dreamed of returning to the stage in a different way, perhaps more intimately, closer to my audience,” Natalia says. “My desire is to share the intimacy I experience with my songs in my room, in my home, in my personal universe, or even in my own imagination.”
In the album Cancionera, Natalia embarks on a sonic journey where tradition and the contemporary intertwine in a dialogue that honors her roots while exploring new dimensions of her art. This marks a new phase in her career, one that returns to the intimacy of her voice and guitar, but with an openness to a sonic universe that amplifies her message.
This project arises from a creative need to explore the duality of her artistic self and to find in music a space for transformation. Cancionera is not just an album, but a manifesto that invites us to rediscover awe, a principle that gives life to her new album.
With the album’s title track, Natalia revealed her artistic alter ego, La Cancionera. La Cancionera is a figure that embodies the essence of music as a bridge between the intimate and the universal. Natalia’s Cancionera is not just a troubadour—she is a wandering spirit, a voice that travels through the night with an air of mystery. She dwells in twilight, singing for those who find in music a way to exist beyond convention. She represents duality: light and shadow, tradition and transgression, sweetness and rebellion.
The music of Cancionera is a reflection of the sounds that have shaped Natalia Lafourcade’s journey. Her Veracruz roots are present as a living influence that has shaped her musical sensitivity. “The Veracruz culture has deeply influenced the way I understand music,” Natalia explains. “In this new album, that influence manifests in the rhythms and the poetics of its lyrics.”
La Cancionera dwells in the shadows and sings for those who find in music a way of existing beyond the conventional. “These songs sing to the Cancionera that we all carry within,” Natalia shares. “It reminds me of the importance of walking my truth.”
Natalia co-produced the album Cancionera with Adan Jodorowsky who worked with her on her recent GRAMMY®-winning album De Todas Las Flores. “On this record, we went even further than in ‘De Todas las Flores,’” Jodorowsky told Rolling Stone. “We had 18 musicians playing together with Natalia in a live setting. There are no tricks, no contrivances of any kind. Natalia is fun, she is deep, she embraces the spirit of punk – all at the same time. Since ‘De Todas las Flores,’ I feel that she finally got to know her own voice. She has connected with a mystical, spiritual energy. It’s almost like sorcery.”
On this musical journey, Natalia is accompanied by talented artists such as Hermanos Gutiérrez, Israel Fernández, Diego del Morao, El David Aguilar, and Gordon Hamilton, who enrich the work with their nuances and sonic textures. Additionally, the work of Soundwalk Collective contributes a sound design that complements the depth of the album, integrating natural sounds as part of the musical landscape.
The repertoire of Cancionera includes original compositions and a couple of reinterpretations of traditional Mexican music that engage in a dialogue with the essence of the project.
