Sango, born Kai Asa Savon Wright, kicked off a North America tour at Believe Music Hall in Atlanta on December 7. A small intimate dance hall hidden inside a former Baptist church, it was the perfect venue for the Seattle DJ to showcase his musical style – dance music sampling from jazz, soul, house, techno, and hiphop all around the globe. Sango was joined by a cast of local DJs affiliated with production company, Milk and Cookies.

Atlanta based DJ Decoteau kicked off the early crowd, showcasing her ability to remix and blend across genres, going from “Tropics” by UK DJ Hagan to everybody’s favorite Toronto rapper Drake in “Get It Together”.

It was a smooth transition to the duo of cleotrvppv and thricegroove, members of the artist collective, player99. They had the audience hyped, playing remixes of trap and hiphop songs like “Trapping Benny” by Yung Gleesh and “Studio” by Schoolboy Q. When one was on the turntables, the other was hyping the audience. As a first time audience member, it was impressive to watch them switch between the two roles and weave their sonic styles together.

The penultimate act, DJ Unruely, served as a really nice bridge between the previous two acts and Sango. While he started the night off with some hiphop beats, he quickly had the crowd moving and singing along to Caribbean beats. Sampling and remixing songs like “Dumebi” by Rema, “Jump” by Rupee, and “Can We Talk” had the audience on their feet, singing along, and letting loose. His hypeman on the stage also commanded the audience’s attention – and by the end of the set, they were ready for Sango.

I thought the audience couldn’t get more excited after DJ Unruely and I was sorely mistaken. It wasn’t the type of chaotic energy that one would see more at a rock concert or a rave, but more of this electric energy that made you want to dance and share the joy with everyone around you. From Brazilian funk inspired beats and remixes to self-produced sounds, Sango had the entire club moving – even the security guards couldn’t help themselves from nodding to the beat. After the concert, I’m sure I wasn’t alone in wanting to take the next day off to keep that energy going into the weekend.
