The new Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet: Open-top driving with AMG performance

The new AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet joins the AMG SL Roadster as the second open-top performance model from Mercedes-AMG. Arriving at U.S. dealerships in the second half of 2024, the 2025 AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet features a spacious interior and generous standard equipment, including AIRCAP®, AIRSCARF® and active rear axle steering. The AMG-enhanced 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine produces 443 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque (443 lb-ft in overboost for up to 10 seconds) thanks to an exhaust gas turbocharger and electric auxiliary compressor. An integrated starter generator provides support at lower engine speeds with 23 hp and 151 lb-ft and also feeds the 48-volt electrical system. Power is delivered via an AMG SPEEDSHIFT® TCT 9G transmission and AMG Performance 4MATIC+ fully variable all-wheel drive.

Exterior design with wide, flared front and rear wheel arches

Numerous AMG-specific design details are highlighted throughout the exterior of the AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet. A signature A-shaped AMG radiator grille and sharp slender lines of the LED headlights contribute to the powerful appearance. Optional DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps with projections are also available. Daytime running light ellipses and blue illumination at the base of the optional headlights further enhance the vehicle’s dynamic aesthetic. The striking front fascia features a raised A-shape (“A-Wing”) middle section that accommodates a large center air inlet and outer air inlets with two cross slats for increased airflow.

Elegantly shaped edges structure the profile of the AMG Cabriolet, while flared front and rear wheel arches, a wide track (+2.3 inches at the front, +3 inches at the rear compared to the Mercedes-Benz model) and standard 19-inch wheels provide an aggressive appearance. Optional 20-inch wheels can also be fitted.

The muscular rear design is characterized by flowing surfaces, smooth transitions and two-part LED taillights with three-dimensional light bodies. A dark red design element connects the taillamps, emphasizing the width of the rear of AMG CLE 53. Round double tailpipe trims are integrated into the rear fascia.

The optional AMG Performance Studio Package adds even more dynamic design elements, including flics on the front and rear fascia, a high-gloss black spoiler lip on the trunk lid and a rear diffuser panel between tailpipe trims. Two AMG Night packages are available, with the second adding additional elements such as a darkened radiator grille and high-gloss black badging on the trunk lid. AMG Carbon Fiber packages are also available to further sharpen the look of the vehicle.

Interior with exclusive equipment and AMG-specific displays

Among the many eye-catching features of the interior are the 12.3-inch digital driver display and driver-oriented 11.9-inch central multimedia display in portrait format. The tilt of the central display can be electrically adjusted from 15 to 40 degrees to prevent reflections caused by sunlight when the soft top is open. Another highlight is the 64-color dynamic ambient lighting that sweeps from the cockpit across the doors and rear side panels to behind the rear seats. This is further complimented by chrome accents that span the entire passenger compartment.

Integral sports seats with outstanding lateral support are covered standard in Black MB-Tex/microfiber upholstery with AMG-specific graphics and red contrast stitching. Available leather upholstery features a special coating designed to keep seat surfaces cooler in direct sunlight by up to 53 degrees Fahrenheit compared to untreated leather. Customers can also choose optional Nappa leather upholstery with the AMG emblem embossed in the front headrests.

Optional AMG Performance seats include even more pronounced bolsters to support highly dynamic driving. Vertical openings integrated into the seat backrests provide further visual accents and improved ventilation.

The driver display allows customers to choose between “Classic,” “Sport” and “Supersport” display styles. The AMG-exclusive “Supersport” style features a central round tachometer and horizontal displays on either side with driver-focused content, creating a sense of spatial depth. The driver can use the AMG menu to display special content, including engine data, suspension and transmission settings, and more. The central multimedia display also emphasizes the dynamic character of the AMG CLE 53 with individual AMG displays such as visualization of the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs and vehicle telemetry data.

AMG-enhanced inline six-cylinder engine with hybrid assist and electric auxiliary compressor

The new AMG CLE 53 is powered by a comprehensively upgraded, AMG-enhanced M256M 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine. The high performance unit impresses with optimized combustion chambers with redesigned intake and exhaust ports, new piston rings and modified injection. A new exhaust gas turbocharger offers an increased boost pressure of 22 psi (previously 16 psi) to produce 413 lb-ft of torque and 443 lb-ft with overboost for up to ten seconds.

An improved electric auxiliary compressor can now operate almost continuously for a longer period of time to provide more torque at a wider range of engine speeds – most noticeably at midrange – and enhance overall responsiveness. This, in turn, allows for a larger exhaust gas turbocharger to be utilized for higher peak performance.

Customers also benefit from the engine’s increased efficiency, including at full load. The second-generation integrated starter generator (ISG), positioned in the transmission bell housing, contributes to efficiency. As a central component of the 48-volt electrical system, it functions as an electric generator and enables mild hybrid functions. This includes support at lower engine speeds with 23 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque, recuperation, load point shifting, gliding and seamless operation of the start-stop function.

AMG high performance brake system

The AMG high performance brake system, equipped standard, is designed to match the power and performance of the AMG CLE 53. It features 14.6 x 1.4-inch perforated and internally ventilated discs with four-piston fixed calipers at the front and 14.2 x 1-inch internally ventilated discs with single-piston floating calipers at the rear.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT® TCT 9G transmission

The AMG-enhanced M256M engine is mated to an AMG SPEEDSHIFT® TCT 9G transmission featuring short shift times, quick response, double-declutch function and multiple downshifts. Response is further heightened in the “Sport+” drive program with immediate upshifts and downshifts. In manual mode, the driver can control gear changes via the steering wheel shift paddles. The transmission calibration is tailored for a variety of driving situations depending on the drive program selected.

AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs with integrated AMG DYNAMICS

Five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs – “Slippery,” “Comfort,” “Sport,” “Sport+” and “Individual” – provide a variety of driving experiences. These range from comfortable to highly dynamic, with parameters for the engine, transmission, suspension and steering specially tuned for each drive program. Independently of the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive program, the driver can switch the transmission directly to manual mode to control gear changes using the steering wheel shift paddles. The driver can also adjust suspension settings regardless of the drive program selected.

The AMG DYNAMICS driving dynamics control system is integrated into the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs. In the “Basic,” “Advanced” and “Pro” settings, for example, it influences the control strategies of the ESP® (Electronic Stability Program) or the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ fully variable all-wheel drive. The intelligent control system anticipates the desired vehicle behavior based on driver input and sensor data. The driver can also use the AMG DRIVE UNIT steering wheel buttons to select the AMG DYNAMICS functions directly.

AMG Performance 4MATIC+ fully variable all-wheel drive

Standard AMG Performance 4MATIC+ fully variable all-wheel drive combines optimal traction for dynamic driving with a high level of driving safety under all conditions. Intelligent control of all-wheel drive is integrated into the car’s overall system architecture, enabling the transition between rear- and all-wheel drive to occur continuously. Torque is distributed based on the driving situation. When driving moderately and in situations where all-wheel drive is not required, the front axle is decoupled to increase efficiency. From the ESP® “Sport” setting onwards, torque distribution is more rear-biased. When Drift mode is engaged, the new AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet operates exclusively in rear-wheel drive.

AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension

The AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet is equipped standard with AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension, developed in Affalterbach for increased agility, more neutral cornering and improved traction. With its particularly sporty damper tuning and adaptive adjustable damping, the steel spring suspension combines excellent driving dynamics with a high level of ride comfort. The damping on each wheel adapts quickly and precisely to the current driving situation and road conditions. This is accomplished via separate valves in the dampers for rebound and compression. In addition, distinctive damper maps can be selected – “Comfort,” “Sport” and “Sport+” – to provide a noticeable difference between ride comfort and dynamic driving characteristics.

Three-stage AMG parameter steering and rear axle steering

The steering layout in the AMG CLE 53 also contributes to the elevated dynamics and comfort. Three-stage AMG parameter steering adapts to the selected AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive program. When parking or maneuvering at low speeds, little steering effort is required. At higher speeds, steering power assistance decreases. The steering wheel also provides the driver with significantly more feedback in the “Sport” and “Sport+” suspension settings.

Rear axle steering, equipped standard, operates with a maximum steering angle of 2.5 degrees. The rear wheels turn to this extent in the opposite direction to the front wheels at speeds up to 60 mph (variable depending on the AMG DYNAMICS setting). This virtually shortens the wheelbase for significantly more agile turn-in, less steering effort and improved maneuverability, resulting in a noticeably reduced turning circle when turning or parking. At speeds above 60 mph (variable depending on the AMG DYNAMICS setting), the rear wheels turn parallel to the front wheels – up to a maximum of 0.7 degrees. The virtually lengthened wheelbase has a positive effect on directional stability. It leads to a faster build-up of lateral force when changing direction, enabling the vehicle to respond more directly to steering commands. The responsiveness of the rear axle steering depends on the selected AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive program.

AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package

The optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package offers expanded dynamic equipment for an even more emotional driving experience, including RACE START and the “RACE” drive program with Drift mode. Active engine mounts provide a greater spread between comfort and performance. Red brake calipers at the front and rear with AMG lettering underscore the sporty character of the AMG CLE 53. In conjunction with this package, customers can also choose an AMG Performance steering wheel in optional Nappa leather/microfiber or microfiber/carbon fiber design.

AIRCAP®, AIRSCARF® and acoustic soft top

The standard upgraded AIRCAP® electric wind deflector system and AIRSCARF® with neck-level heating and ventilation make open-top driving even more comfortable in cool weather. The AIRCAP® system consists of two elements. A wind deflector on the windshield redirects airflow over the heads of occupants. It extends at the touch of a button and helps the automatic wind deflector behind the rear headrests reduce turbulence even more efficiently. The AIRSCARF® envelops the neck and shoulders of front passengers with even warmer air than in previous models – even in windy conditions.

Available in black, red or grey, the acoustic soft top features a multi-layer design with extensive insulation. This ensures excellent protection from the elements and also reduces wind and road noise. Fully power operated for the first time, the soft top opens or closes in as little as 20 seconds and can be operated at speeds up to 37 mph. When the soft top is fully open, an electric divider separates the folded top from the cargo space in the trunk.

Versatility

With 9.6 cubic feet of cargo space, the trunk offers plenty of space for everyday use. 60:40 split-folding rear seats enable cargo space to further expand when the rear seat backrests are folded down. Standard KEYLESS-GO® with HANDS-FREE ACCESS allows for no-touch access to the trunk, as well as the doors to be locked and unlocked by simply touching the door handle.

Safety

Targeted reinforcement of the bodyshell structures provides a high level of structural safety, even without a fixed roof. Rigid A-pillars in combination with a system behind the rear seats serves as rollover protection. Among the extensive standard safety features of the AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet are 11 airbags, including a new center airbag between front occupants and head airbags for rear seat passengers. PRE-SAFE® is also equipped standard. The system can recognize critical driving situations at an early stage, provide warning and initiate precautionary protective measures.
