TOWA BIRD Shares New Song “Sorry Sorry” – Debut Album American Hero Out June 28

Singer/songwriter/guitarist TOWA BIRD announces the forthcoming release of her long-awaited debut album, American Hero. Due out via Interscope Records on June 28, the Hong Kong-born artist’s first full-length album spotlights her phenomenal guitar talents alongside the unguarded emotional honesty of her songwriting. A shining example of that dynamic, Towa’s bittersweet new single “Sorry Sorry”.

On June 28, Towa Bird — named by Rolling Stone as one of “the brightest new stars to watch in 2024” — will release American Hero in physical format, including a standard LP in black vinyl and an Urban Outfitters exclusive variant in grape vinyl. Vinyl available HERE.

A fast-rising alt-rock star, Towa created American Hero with producers Alexander 23 (Olivia Rodrigo, Tate McRae), Luke Niccoli (Carly Rae Jepsen, Gwen Stefani), and The Naked and Famous’ Thomas Powers. Although the album fully channels the explosive energy Towa brought to the stage as support for Reneé Rapp’s Snow Hard Feelings Tour, its songs examine such complex topics as queer love and identity with extraordinary sensitivity and a profound sense of purpose.

“The title of American Hero is entirely ironic — I’m not American, and in my view I’m not heroic either,” says Towa, who was mostly raised in Thailand and London. “These songs are me being completely honest about queer love and all its essence; there’s a lot of yearning and vulnerability and dealing with difficult emotions. I grew up listening to so many male-gazey love songs, and it was important to put something out into the world that felt like the music I wanted for myself when I was a kid.”

On “Sorry Sorry,” Towa brings her wistful vocals and delicately crafted lyrics to a song exploring what she refers to as “the uncertainties and insecurities of falling in love with a friend.”

“We all know this feeling: knowing that you love them as friend, but that there will always be something more, something unsaid,” says Towa. “The song delves into my internal monologue — a journey of weighing risks, asking a series of what-ifs, giving too much attention to irrational fears. Raising my defenses so high that I almost psych myself out. Worrying I might lose them and worrying that things will never be the same”.

Produced by Niccoli, “Sorry Sorry” first emerged as Towa and fellow Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Luke Wild experimented on acoustic guitars, then evolved into a punchy piece of alt-pop delivered with equal parts tenderness and intensity. With its prismatic beats and hypnotic guitar textures, “Sorry Sorry” ultimately reveals Towa’s rare gift for setting complicated emotions to immediately catchy melody.

In addition to “Sorry Sorry,” American Hero showcases Towa’s forward-thinking musicality on tracks like her debut single “Wild Heart” (praised as “exuberant” by NYLON and “an infectious indie-pop romp” by Guitar World), “Boomerang” (lauded as a “shimmering indie rock anthem” by Ones To Watch), “This Isn’t Me” (a soul-baring reflection penned after attending Paris Fashion Week), and fan favorites like her anti-capitalist anthem “B.I.L.L.S.” and “Drain Me!” (a sublimely loopy love song partly co-written with Mikky Ekko, whose credits include Rihanna’s nine-times-platinum single “Stay”).

Towa is now gearing up to take the stage at major festivals like All Things Go Music Festival in September at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD. Known for an exhilarating live show that instantly creates a powerful connection with the crowd, Towa released a five-song EP titled Live from Terminal 5 last December.
