Maryland-born, LA-based artist Dana McCoy makes a major statement with her gripping alt-R&B single “Important” – the first from her forthcoming debut EP To Those Who Wait

Entering the EP era in a stunning capacity, Dana’s signature style of lavish musicality shines again on “Important”. Producing sophisticated R&B with an electronic soul, the silky slow burn of lingering harmonies matched with Dana’s commanding vocal ebb and flow in a hauntingly beautiful but assured performance. As her voice floats atop a colourful, multi-layered track to tell a story of empowerment, mixings of classic back beats and a fresh production allow Dana to masterfully sit in the parallels, emerging with a unique sound both classy and contemporary.

In a statement about the song, Dana says: “Important is the funny clap-back at anyone who’s ever had your name in their mouth. Taking the power back and twisting that attention into a good thing. You’ve made me the centrepiece of your life. Beyoncé said, “You know you that bitch when you cause all this conversation” and this song is my own sort of interpretation of that.”

Following on from the success of recent single “Night After Night”, the critically acclaimed release has built buzz from major taste-making platforms such as CLASH, EARMILK, CLOUT, EARLY RISING and A1234 – as well as making a splash on DSPs via Spotify’s Fresh Finds and Butter playlists.

Growing up in a musical household, with some of her earliest memories stemming from her parent’s love of Prince and ‘60’s girl groups, Dana’s close family bond is undeniably interwoven into Dana’s artistic DNA – hearing her Dad’s favourite songs reflected in the melodies, and her sister’s favourite artists in the harmonies. Now making art as a young, Black woman proud of her Ghanaian heritage, Dana’s inspirations are an amalgamation of her family and culture; pulling from different Black artists of past and present, Dana has created herself a style blending retro twists with Afro-futurism. Conscious of her desire to help reshape and broaden the lens through which Black women are seen, Dana takes charge of her work as an all-around creative talent, appearing as co or sole creative director on all visuals of her artistry.

Lighting up the genre with vibrant and soulful jams, Dana McCoy’s winning combination of confident creativity and undeniable vocal talent is quickly building buzz – with further new music to come this year, the rising star’s new music is excitedly awaited.
