By 7 PM, a long line of Jazmin Bean fans had already formed, stretching down Irving Place. The fans, easily recognizable by their elaborate makeup and styles inspired by their idol, were buzzing with excitement. Every time the line seemed to move, the crowd erupted in screams. Parents, looking relieved, guided their eager children towards the venue doors. I joined the procession.

Tonight’s show at Irving Plaza in Manhattan, NYC, is a highlight of Jazmin Bean’s Traumatic Livelihood tour, which is currently in full swing before they head back to Europe. The opening act, Comet, took the stage at 8 PM to a wave of cheers and palpable excitement. Comet, who describe their music as “Nu grunge” and are based in NYC, immediately captured the audience’s attention. Their lead singer, Comet Candler, energized the crowd with her dynamic stage presence, her long black braids whipping around like wild snakes. The audience was clearly familiar with the band and their music, enthusiastically singing along to many of the choruses. Although Comet won’t be continuing the tour with Jazmin Bean, they have their own short European tour planned for November.

The anticipation reached its peak as the headliner, Jazmin Bean, took the stage. Jazmin, who came out as non-binary in 2019 and is known for their unique style and powerful performances, was greeted with deafening screams and a sea of phones capturing their entrance. Jazmin was dressed in a long plum-colored gown and black boots, with their hair worn loose and their makeup more subdued than usual. They opened the set with the track “Piggie,” and the crowd went wild.

Jazmin’s performance was a whirlwind of energy, with them dancing and twirling non-stop throughout the hour-long set. They played a total of 20 songs, many of which were from their latest album, Traumatic Livelihood. The drummer and guitarist provided a solid musical foundation from the back of the stage, allowing Jazmin to shine at the forefront. The crowd’s support was unwavering, with fans screaming their encouragement and holding up handmade signs expressing their love and admiration.
