History filled up early for Jean Dawson, whose genre-blurring catalogue has made him one of the more unpredictable openers on tour right now. The San Diego–born artist, known for fusing alternative rock, hip-hop, and experimental pop, delivered a set that leaned into distortion-heavy guitars and sharp dynamic shifts. His live presence matched his recordings: restless and unpolished in a way that felt intentional, warming up the Toronto crowd with a sound that refuses to sit neatly in one lane.

When Miguel’s stage was revealed, the visual centerpiece immediately shifted the tone. An upside-down wrecked car dominated the set, positioned in the middle of the stage as smoke rolled around it. The design felt deliberate and cinematic, framing the performance before a single note was sung. Miguel eventually climbed on top of the overturned vehicle, using it as a platform throughout the night.

Miguel, born Miguel Jontel Pimentel in Los Angeles, first broke through with his 2010 debut All I Want Is You. He solidified his place in contemporary R&B with 2012’s Kaleidoscope Dream, which featured “Adorn,” the Grammy Award–winning single that remains a defining moment in his career. Across subsequent releases like Wildheart (2015) and War & Leisure (2017), he expanded his sound beyond traditional R&B, incorporating psychedelic rock textures, live instrumentation, and layered vocal production.

At History, that evolution translated clearly in a live setting. Backed by a full band, Miguel moved fluidly between falsetto-driven ballads and more guitar-forward material. His vocal control stood out, particularly in sustained high notes that carried cleanly across the venue. The arrangements felt fuller than their studio counterparts, with extended instrumental moments that emphasized the band’s presence.

The production elevated the performance without overwhelming it. Lighting shifted in sync with the mood of each song, casting silhouettes against the car structure and washing the stage in deep reds and purples. The set design never felt static; it created dimension and movement even during slower moments.

By the end of the night, the combination of strong live vocals, cohesive staging, and a striking visual concept anchored the show. Miguel’s performance balanced atmosphere with musicianship, using the dramatic set—especially the upside-down car—to frame a catalog that continues to blend R&B, rock, and soul on his own terms.
